What is "Battle of the Youstrass"
Battle of the Youstrass is a Strategic RPG(Role Playing Game). You can
shape the history of the Youstrass through the game.
What is a Strategic RPG?
Strategic RPG incorporates RPG elements to the strategic game. So it
puts strong emphasis on characters and their developments. But unlike
traditional computer RPGs, SRPG is closer to the drama in which a player
decides characters' action while minor decisions are made by the
characters themselves. As a strategic game, SRPG presents many
challenges in a strategic form even though it's simpler than the
traditional strategic games. As it is, it's easier to play while still
maintaining an element of surprise from it's strong story aspect.
The feature of "Battle of the Youstrass"
Multi Scenario
Battle of the Youstrass features the multi-scenario. It's the player who
decides the history of Youstrass. There are several critical points in
the game where the major changes can occur depending on the player's
decision. But there are also many minor branches that may not be
obvious at the first place... Many things contribute to the overall
flow of game. So each time you play the game, you can relive the
experience differently.
Semi-realtime battle.
Unlike most realtime strategic games, each unit in the game has it's
own unique personality. And part of the fun comes from watching the
growth of player characters. Thus Battle of the Youstrass adopted the
semi-realtime game system. While partly maintaining the reality of a
battle involving many units, the game gives sufficient time to think
before each movement. It is accomplished by the following rules.
- You can move one unit at a time like chess. But unlike chess, you
can't decide who will move first. The order of movement is basically
decided at the beginning of stage. But once the unit finishes it's
action, the time required to wait till the next action is decided by the
pilot's reaction speed (the game term is activity). So the order can and
will change during the time. Of course there are other factors that
affect the order. (i.e. if the unit opts to do nothing during its turn,
that unit's next turn will come a lot faster). This is to reflect the
chaos of the battle. This may sound complex but all you have to do is
controlling one active unit at a time.
- Now unlike real-time strategic games, once you get to control one of
your units, which is called active unit, you can take as much time as
you want like chess. This is to reflect the fact that every units are
operated by the individual pilots not some drones following the order of
the commander. So you can carefully consider the unit's action before
actually moving that unit.
